The University of Zambia (UNZA) has signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Rwanda aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in research, academic exchange and capacity building.
UNZA Vice-Chancellor Professor Mundia Muya described the MoU renewal as a significant step in advancing African led solutions through collaborative education and research frameworks.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Professor Muya said the MoU represents a strategic commitment to joint research initiatives in areas of mutual academic and societal relevance.
“This agreement will facilitate the exchange of academic staff, scholars and students, with the goal of enhancing transnational learning and scholarly engagement,” Prof. Muya said.
Prof. Muya also stated that the partnership affirms UNZA’s broader mission to deliver high-quality, relevant, and responsive higher education, research, and innovation that meets societal needs.
He explained that the co-sponsorship of seminars, training programs, workshops, and academic symposia under the MoU is designed to build capacity and foster intellectual exchange between the two institutions.
“This strategic initiative will not only help strengthen community engagement but also elevate our international academic profile,” Prof. Muya emphasized.
“Through close collaboration with the University of Rwanda and the Rwandan High Commission, UNZA has successfully established a strong foundation for implementing this renewed partnership.”
Speaking at the same event, the University of Rwanda Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayihura Didas, described the MoU as a model of African academic solidarity.
“This agreement shows that African universities can lead, innovate, and drive transformation through cross-border cooperation,” he added.
“It includes knowledge-sharing and policy-oriented research that supports governments and communities with evidence-based solutions.”
Meanwhile, Rwandan High Commissioner to Zambia, Emmanuel Bugingo, highlighted the long-standing and active relationship between the two institutions.
“This partnership is rooted in shared academic goals, and the High Commission of Rwanda in Zambia remains committed to facilitating cooperation through continued diplomatic and administrative support,” he reaffirmed.
