UNZA Geology Student dies on his birthday

TWENTY TWO-year-old University of Zambia (UNZA) School of Mines, Department of Geology, Third-year Student has died in the early hours of today, May 30, 2025.

UNZA Mineral Society (UNZAMS), President Charles Chisenga revealed that the deceased, Tinashe Ngulube, had been diagnosed with a chronic headache.

In an interview with Lusaka Star, Mr. Chisenga disclosed that Mr. Ngulube passed away in Mumbwa, on the same day he was supposed to celebrate his birthday.

“Today was actually supposed to be his birthday, according to the family. Mr. Ngulube had been diagnosed with a chronic headache and was admitted to the hospital last evening. He passed away shortly after,” Mr. Chisenga explained.

He expressed sadness over the untimely death of Mr. Ngulube, saying the student could have contributed to the economic development of the country.

“He was training as a geologist and was expected to contribute significantly to the mining sector, which is vital to Zambia’s economy. As the School of Mines, we have lost a soldier of great potential and value.”

“We are working hand in hand with UNZASU to collect contributions for our brother’s funeral from students, and indeed from our own coffers. We are also happy that the Dean of Students (DOSA) has released a bus and a funeral grant,” Mr. Chisenga added.

He further appealed to the government and other stakeholders to assist with transportation to bring back the deceased’s twin brother, Kudakwashe Ngulube, who is on a HELSB scholarship in Morocco, so he can mourn his brother.

Meanwhile, the University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Mr. Ngulube.

“May God comfort his family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time. May he rest in peace,” read a statement posted on the union’s official Facebook page.
