Former University of Zambia Students’ Union (UNZASU) leaders Jemimah Mwaba and Kabaso Mwanto are among the UPND nominees set to take up seats in the National Assembly under Zambia’s newly introduced proportional representation system this morning 18 September, 2026.at Mulungushi International Conference Centre.
Kabaso Mwanto, popularly known as Shuwa Shuwa, is a former UNZASU president, while Jemimah Mwaba, popularly known as Commander Kwishiba, served as UNZASU vice president.
Their nominations follow the enactment of the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No. 13 of 2025, which introduced 40 proportional representation seats in the National Assembly.
The nominations of Mwaba and Mwanto are yet to be validated by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) as of this morning, meaning their formal confirmation to serve in Parliament remains subject to the electoral body’s validation process.
Their nomination places two former student leaders on the path from student representation to national politics, bringing youth leadership experience from Zambia’s largest public university into the country’s legislative space.
If validated by Commission of Zambia (ECZ) , Mwaba and Mwanto will join the National Assembly through the proportional representation arrangement rather than through direct constituency elections.
