The league which was scheduled to kick start on 15th October 2014 was postponed and had since been moved to Saturday, 22nd October, 2014. THE University of Zambia (UNZA) Inter Hostels League will this weekend come to life as the tournament commences with different sports teams in various sports disciplines ready to battle it out for the ultimate challenge.
The league which has for many years accommodated only male football will for the first time accommodate other sports disciplines which among them include female football, basketball, netball and volleyball.
In an interview with The Lusaka Star, University of Zambia Student Union sports secretary Nervas Simwemba said this academic’s year Inter Hostels League would include other sports as a way of promoting other sports disciplines on campus.
He added, “We are trying to empower more women than men this time around because the women have been complaining that they are not benefiting from the sports and recreation fee that they pay.”
Simwemba added that every team participating in the league was subjected to pay K50 as affiliation fee adding that the prize money for male soccer was K2, 000 and female soccer was K1, 500.
“Each sports discipline has a specific prize money allocated to them. Men are subjected to K2, 000 prize money because there are a lot of male students who take part in soccer as compared to other sports disciplines,” he added.
Simwemba further encouraged students to take keen interest in sports noting that a league like this was able to offer students a platform to showcase their talents.
“I urge players of other disciplines especially the females to simply come on board and participate in this year’s Inter Hostels League as this is aimed at developing their talents,” he noted.
Meanwhile, UNZA netball team captain Stella Choongo said the approach taken by UNZASU to promote female sports at the institution was a good idea.
She said, “The idea is good as it will help develop sports at the institution. For example it will help the netball team assess which players to be recruited in the University team.”
