UNZA students construct concrete bridge

Mutala Maipambe, Jolezya Chungu, Chilekwa Soma and Ceaser Mufuzi came up with the initiative after realizing that students residing in Kalingalinga had difficulties coming into campus during the rainy season. A group of University of Zambia (UNZA) students have built a concrete bridge at UNZA’s Kalingalinga entrance in a bid to help students residing in Kalingalinga compound.

Mutala Maipambe, Jolezya Chungu, Chilekwa Soma and Ceaser Mufuzi came up with the initiative after realizing that students residing in Kalingalinga had difficulties coming into campus during the rainy season.

A representative of the group, Ceaser Mufuzi, who is also a third year student in the school of education told the Lusaka Star in an interview that they saw the need to build a bridge leading into campus from Kalingalinga after seeing and being subjected to exploitation by youths from Kalingalinga.

“We felt the need to build a bridge after being subjected to payments each time it rained. Students used to be charged k3 just to use the makeshift bridge mounted by Kalingalinga youths,” he explained.

“After being subjected to the daily payments of crossing the makeshift bridge, my friends and I decided to contact the University of Zambia Student Union (UNZASU) Secretary General for assistance,” Mr. Mufuzi added.

He claimed that the students union declined to build the bridge due to a policy that restricted them from embarking on projects outside campus boundaries.

Mr. Mufuzi said the students then embarked on the project to build the bridge by using their own money.

He says the bridge cost K3200 to build with additional contributions coming from pledges made by well wishers.

Mr. Mufuzi advised fellow students to come up with initiatives aimed at dealing with daily problems faced by the student populace instead of relying entirely on management or government.

He further appealed to management to look at issues affecting students who reside in and outside campus instead of giving a blind eye to their plights.

Meanwhile, Some students have expressed happiness on the initiative taken to build the concrete bridge at the Kalingalinga entrance.

Thoko Mwale, a second year student said the bridge would not only help students but even Residents of Kalingalinga.

She noted that it was time students stopped depending on their union and management to address the various problems they face but instead come up with initiatives that would address different issues affecting students.

And another second year student Gwen Banda called on management to seriously look into the plight of students.

She said management together with the students union had the responsibility to address the many challenges faced by students within and outside campus.
