This is the first time that Zambia will be hosting the championship The Zambia Scrabble Association is set to host the East, Central Africa Championship which is slated for March 2014 in Lusaka.
Speaking in an interview with the Lusaka Star, Zambia Scrabble Association deputy secretary general, Patrick Mpundu said the association had welcomed the opportunity to host one of Africa’s biggest competitions in Scrabble.
“This competition is a big opportunity to put Zambia on the international calendar of Scrabble,” he noted.
Mpundu also said trainings ahead of the African challenge had intensified and that the current Zambia Scrabble calendar was favourable for the team to put up a stiff challenge at next year’s championship.
“The calendar has got a lot of games and will therefore ensure that the team is adequately prepared for next year’s tournament,” he said.
Mpundu further added that Zambia Scrabble had put up competitive games in the quest to select the best team to represent Zambia at the competition.
“Each month there are three games that help the association to rank the players according to their performance,” he explained.
Mpundu however bemoaned the lack of sponsorship of scrubble in the country.
“Zambia Scrabble Association has been hit by financial constraints hence the need for the corporate world to come on board and help improve Scrabble in the country,” He sated.
Mpundu noted that there was need to improve the already existing scrabble clubs adding that scrabble clubs should also be introduced in schools, colleges and universities in the country as a way of improving the sport.
This is the first time that Zambia will host the championship.
