THE Zambia Inter-University Tournament organised by the Zambia University Sports Association (ZUSA) kicked off yesterday at the Copperbelt University (CBU) in Kitwe. The three day tournament will run from 14th to 16th February 2014 and will comprise various sporting disciplines such as basketball, netball, volleyball, football, rugby, badminton, chess, scrabble and tennis.
The tournament which is held annually attracts participation from various universities across the country.
And the University of Zambia (UNZA) sports teams have expressed confidence of coming out victorious in their various sports disciplines.
Some of the UNZA teams that will be defending their titles at this year’s championship include the UNZA football teams (UNZA Bola and UNZA Feso), UNZA netball team (UNZA Net) and the UNZA badminton team (UNZA bad) as well as UNZA Pacers and Honeyz (Male and female basketball teams).
UNZA Pacers and Honeyz go into the basketball category as favourites after winning the Sprite National Basketball Championship in December last year.
In an interview with the Lusaka Star before departure, UNZA Pacers and Honeyz said they were ready to defend their titles as champions at the tournament.
UNZA Pacer’s team captain, Mate Lisimbi was confident of defending their title at this year’s tournament.
“We defended the championship two years in a roll and I am confident that team is more than prepared to face their arch rival and host CBU Comets,” he said.
And UNZA Honeyz team vice chairperson, Elizabeth Daka declared her team ready for this year’s tournament.
“UNZA Honeyz have been champions since 2009 and I am sure that we will win this year’s tournament too,” she stated.
Meanwhile, UNZA Sports Council secretary general Innocent Chishimba confirmed UNZA’s participation in this year’s tournament with great confidence stating that the UNZA sports teams would come out victorious in the various sporting disciplines.
“All UNZA teams are ready for the tournament meaning that the UNZA populace should expect victory from these teams,” he said.
Chishimba has since wished the UNZA participating teams good luck.
