Police  in Luapula Province have arrested a Witch-Finder for naming a person to be a wizard and obtaining K60, 000 by falsely pretending to prophecy circumstances in people’s lives.

Meanwhile, Police officers in Lunga area of Samfya district are working in fear after local people started throwing stones to let go of the witch finders.

The 67-year- old witch-finder that was found with a 70- year- old Congolese lady believed to have been his wife at a named lodge in Chief Musaila area was charged with four counts of naming a person to be a wizard and obtaining money by false pretense.

It was alleged that the witch-finder was called in by a named chief that was suspected to have caused the disappearance of a 75-year-old lady in Chief Kalimakonde’s area.

In March, on dates unknown, a 75-year-old lady went missing in Kalimakonde’s area under unknown circumstances and the subjects suspected a named chief to be behind the disappearance of the old lady.

Luapula Province Police Deputy Chief Webby Shula confirmed this in an interview.

Mr Shula said the witch-finder was brought in the area to cleanse the land from witches and wizards and also find the cause of the disappearance of the old lady.

It was reported that the witch-finder would be paid money and material properties to intervene in lives of people in Kamalikondes’s area.

The witch-finder however proceeded from Chief Kamalikondes’s area to Chief Kasoma’s area in Lunga district for witch finding where he obtained an Isuzu Toyota vehicle during his practices.

When police officers tried to stop the witch-finder from obtaining money from the local people, they were stoned y the people and the witch-finder refused to discuss the matter with the police.

Both police in Lunga and Samfya withdrew from the case with minor injuries in fear of being hurt.
