LCC has advised members of the public to participate fully in the ‘Keep Zambia Clean Campaign’. THE Lusaka City Council has challenged members of the public to take keen interest in the implementation of the 'Keep Zambia Clean Campaign' to ensure its success.
In an interview with the Lusaka Star, LCC Assistant Public Relations Manager, Habeenzu Mulunda said the campaign has not achieved its intended objectives because most people in the community were not taking the campaign seriously.
Mr. Mulunda said that it was unfortunate that people opted to leave everything to the Council when they were the ones who were supposed to take the lead in the campaign.
“People should understand that the Council is only there to sensitise the people and review the campaign but the main drivers to bringing the desired change is the public itself,” Mr Habeenzu said.
Mr Habeenzu added that much has not been achieved from the campaign since its inception as there was lack of harmonisation between the Council and the public.
“As a Council, we have been sensitising people on the importance of keeping clean and we will continue doing so. I would say, we have done our best but a lot more has to be done by the public because only their full participation can make a difference. Besides, if there was an outbreak of disease they are the very people who would be affected,” he added.
Mr Habeenzu has since advised members of the public to communicate to their councillors if they needed equipment such as bins which would help in keeping the city clean.
'The Keep Zambia Clean Campaign' was launched in 2007 by the late Republican President Levy Mwanawasa with the aim of keeping the country clean by ensuring people maintain clean surroundings.
