Celebrity’s image is often shaped by the people managing them- ROCKSTONE

Zambian entertainers have emphasized the importance of fashion as a powerful communication tool, expressing concern over the need for uniqueness in celebrity branding.

In an interview with Lusaka Star, Southern Province Singer and Rapper Beauty Sibanda, popularly known as Rockstone, noted that fashion communicates different messages depending on how people perceive it, and it can serve as a source of inspiration.

“We have women who dress like men, and the reason they are branded like that lies with their managers,” Rockstone said.

She said a celebrity’s image is often shaped by the people managing them.

Rockstone added that branding in fashion often reflects African identity and inspiration.

“When it comes to certain branding, most of it is about showing off African dress codes and inspiration. You need to be outstanding,” she said.

She  stressed that celebrities should not look like everyone else, as uniqueness is key to branding, fashion, and design.

“For you to inspire people with your dress code, you have to put in a lot of hard work in your craft. Other people mistakenly take it for sexuality and whatnot,” she said.

“Instead of going to Kamwala and buying regular clothing, get a designer and look outstanding. You just have to look pleasant because you are an artist.”

She further emphasized that how one dresses should be based on personal choice, without allowing others to define them.

Meanwhile, M Beats Generation Founder,Music Producer, and Entertainment Consultant Mzenga Mwale, popularly known as DJ Mzenga Man, emphasized the importance of dressing appropriately.

“Some people dress to send a message that people need to see me. As a celebrity, whether in a good or bad mood, you need to look good,” DJ Mzenga Man said.

He  said, those who understand their craft make deliberate efforts to maintain their image through fashion.

DJ Mzenga Man added that some celebrities clearly understand the image they want to portray when performing or attending events.

“There are a few who just want to dress so that they are seen and talked about by people. That’s when ‘dress to kill’ comes in,” DJ Mzenga Man said.

“Appropriate dress code can be used to communicate deeper messages beyond just looking good.”
