Lusaka bus drivers have raised concerns over their safety and the safety of passengers following the government’s introduction of 24-hour business operations.
Speaking in an interview with Lusaka Star, Kulima Tower Bus Station Chairman Nicholas Banda appealed to authorities to improve security by installing street lights in areas like Cairo Road, Town Centre, and bus stations such as City Market and Kulima Tower.
“Increased security is very important, especially in residential areas, to ensure the safety of workers and residents,” Mr Banda said.
He expressed appreciation to the government for the move, stating that it is a good initiative because it will create job opportunities, especially among youths.
“It’s an equally good opportunity for marketers, because they will have more time to carry out business and thereby increase their income,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kulima Tower bus driver Steve Mzulu said he is willing to work longer hours if it results in higher income.
“There’s a need for government to put security measures in areas of operation to ensure safety during the night,” Mr Mzulu said.
However, another bus driver, Bernard Phiri, expressed concern that the longer shifts could have a negative impact on some drivers and their general health due to lack of enough rest.
