UNZASU and UNZA Sports Council organised the soccer tournament The University of Zambia Students Union has reaffirmed its commitment to providing sporting activities to all students that do not feature in any of the University of Zambia sports teams.
UNZASU in conjuction with the Unza Sports Council are hosting the Inter hostel soccer tournament.
This is an attempt by UNZASU to ensure that every student takes part in sports activities as not everyone can be on the available school sports teams.
Speaking in an interview with the Lusaka Star News,UNZASU Sports Secretary Nasho Banda said it is a start of what the student union wants to do for the students in terms of recreation.
He indicated that next term they would host other sports tournaments such as basketball adding that soccer was just the pilot sport to test the success of the event.
Banda added that 10 teams are participating in the tournament, drawn from all the hostels on campus.
The tournament started on the 16th of November and is scheduled to end on the 24th of November 2013.
UNZASU and the Unza Sports Council have put K1000 as the prize money for the winning team, K800 for the runners up, K500 for the third position and a K50 for the top scorer of the tournament.
The Sports Secretary added that UNZASU and the Unza Sports Council intend to have a permanent soccer league for the university in which all hostel football teams would be competing for various prizes.
Gordon Chookwa a fourth year student playing for the Africa hostel team welcomed the move by UNZASU and the Sports Council stating tha it would help students take part in recreation activities and stay away from bad activities such as abusing alcohol and prostitution.
