Table Tennis stars seek glory

Zambia Table Tennis Association (ZTTA) has sent a squad to Windhoek, Namibia, for the 2025 Southern Africa Regional Championships, to be held from July 14 to 17.

In an interview with Lusaka Star, ZTTA General Secretary Martin Chewe said the association managed to secure funding for only seven players four boys and three girls out of the intended team of ten, who departed on July 10.

“It has been a serious struggle. We have been knocking on doors every day, making calls, sending proposals, and appealing to anyone who could help,” Chewe said.

“I am happy we finally found a solution to our problem, but I cannot deny the frustration.”

However, he expressed confidence in the players despite the challenges faced in sending them for the competition.

“We might be late and not at full strength, but the talent, passion, and determination these young players have cannot be ignored,” Chewe added.

“Even with the uncertainty of whether or not they would go, they remained focused.”

He further stated that the competition presents a vital opportunity for athletes to earn world ranking points and gain exposure to high-level play.

Chewe also expressed optimism about the tournament, saying it would help rekindle the nation’s confidence in its table tennis prospects.

He said this would renew the conversation around investing in youth development through sport.
