RDA urged to re-design road junction on Market Street and the Great East Road

PIONEER Association in Zambia has called on the Road Development Agency (RDA) to consider re-designing the road junction of Market Street and the Great East Road located opposite the Chelstone Catholic Church so as to reduce the traffic congestion as well as road accidents. PIONEER Association in Zambia has called on the Road Development Agency (RDA) to consider re-designing the road junction on Market Street and the Great East Road located opposite the Chelstone Catholic Church.

Pioneer Association in Zambia national director Charles Searson said RDA should quickly re-design the road junction so as to reduce the current traffic congestion as well as road accidents.

Fr. Searson said the road junction at Market Street and Great East Road intersects two busy roads, adding that this leads to excessive traffic congestion and fatal road accidents.

“It’s an inter-city high way from Lusaka to Chipata which makes it very busy. We therefore appeal to the Road Development Agency to redesign the junction in a form of an elongated field that will allow traffic from the airport and from the Lusaka City Centre, from Chelston Market area and from Avondale to freely flow in the required direction without the hindrance of traffic lights,” he explained.

Fr. Season has also called on the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RATSA) to intensify the breath-check tests on vehicle drivers aimed at bringing those driving under the influence of alcohol to book.

And Pioneer Association in Zambia assistant administrator, Jessy Zimba said the current situation at the junction of Market Street and Great East Road calls for immediate and appropriate action from all stakeholders in order to safe guard people’s lives in the surrounding community.

Meanwhile, Our Heavenly Father Chelston Catholic Church parish assistant administrator David Tembo, added that the church was concerned at the increasing number of accidents which occur frequently at the road junction.

“Due to the number of accidents witnessed here, we as a church conducted prayers at the site and around Avondale area,” he said.

The Association made suggestions on the possible solutions to the matter and have since submitted the suggestions to RDA, RTSA as well as the Lusaka City Council.

Pioneer Association is a Catholic grouping whose objective is to promote temperance and sobriety as well as discourage the excessive use of alcohol among members of the community.
