Minister of Education Announces Recruitment of 2,000 Teachers

Minister of Education Douglas Siakalima today announced the recruitment of 2,000 teachers, comprising 565 primary school teachers and 1,343 secondary school teachers.

In line with government’s commitment to inclusivity, 10 percent of the positions have been reserved for persons with disabilities.

Speaking during a press briefing, Minister Siakalima said the current teacher deficit stands at over 140 thousand, while the pupil-teacher ratio at primary level is 46:1 against the recommended 40:1 ratio.

“At secondary level, some schools have pupil-teacher ratios exceeding 60:1, reflecting severe pressure on teacher capacity,” Dr. Siakalima said.

He noted that the recruitment aims to improve the teacher-pupil ratio, address inequitable distribution, decongest classrooms, and strengthen staffing in critical areas such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

“The recruitment process will be undertaken within public service procedures and coordinated by the Teaching Service Commission, the Ministry of Education, and other relevant institutions to ensure transparency and accountability,” he said.

Meanwhile, Teaching Service Commission Chairperson Daphne Chimuka advised all prospective applicants to update their credentials.

“We have introduced a digital application system accessible through an online platform, in addition to the physical application that will be relayed to Zampost,” she said.

She added that ZAMPOST has extended its express mail services to areas it previously did not cover and where there are no postal services.

She emphasized that law enforcement officers will be part of the process to ensure a corruption-free and credible recruitment process.

The Teaching Service Commission will, tomorrow, Tuesday, 21 April 2026, issue an advert in both print and electronic media inviting applications for the recruitment of 2,000 teachers.
