EARLY RECESS AMID WATER CRISIS AT UNZA.

The University of Zambia Students’ Union (UNZASU) has called for an immediate early recess following a meeting with the Dean of Students over the worsening water crisis affecting campus residents.

In a statement issued by UNZASU Information and Publicity Secretary Kaluba Kaluba, the union said the prolonged shortage has left sanitation facilities non-functional and created unsafe living conditions for students.

“The institution has been experiencing a continued water crisis, resulting in non-functional sanitation facilities and unsafe living conditions for students,” Kaluba said.

Students have reportedly been relying on water bowsers, often spending long hours in queues to access water, a situation UNZASU described as both time-consuming and unsafe.

Following deliberations, the union resolved that students should vacate campus immediately to allow authorities time to address the crisis.

“In light of this, we have resolved that an immediate early recess be effected starting tomorrow, 17th April, to allow students to vacate campus while the situation is being addressed,” Kaluba stated.

Meanwhile, University Management has clarified that the recess is in line with the approved 2025/2026 academic calendar. In a notice issued to the university community, management stated that Friday, 17th April, 2026 marks the end of classes for regular students.

Management further announced that 20th to 24th April has been designated as a study break for students preparing for Mid-Year Examinations, while those not sitting for exams will remain on recess from 17th April to 22nd May, 2026.
