IMMINET local fashion designer Kasanga Tumbo’s fashion label, ‘Afro-Retro Fashion Zambia,’ is slowly gaining recognition in the Zambia’s fashion industry.
Kasanga narrates to the Lusaka star in an interview that his fashion label, which he launched in 2012, is a blend of the Western and African dress.
“Having launched Afro-Retro Fashion Zambia two years ago, I strongly believe that the most important thing in this modern world is to appreciate, respect and embrace our traditions as Africans,” the Fashionista says.
Kasanga adds that fashion designing, especially in developing countries like Zambia, could be the newest employer for locals. He notes that people, especially the youths should stop waiting for employment but rather create employment for themselves.
“Fashion is a platform on which we can express our feelings about societal issues. If taken seriously, fashion designing can be the next biggest employer, especially in developing countries like ours,” Kasanga laments.
Kasanga, who is currently studying law at Cavendish University, where he is known for his artistic designs, has no professional background in fashion designing. He says he developed interest in fashion designing noting that this prompted him to teach himself the intricacies of fashion designing.
He adds, “As you might be aware, fashion label is slowly taking shape at Cavendish University, even if I really have no professional background or whatsoever with regards to fashion designing. In fact I just taught myself how to use a sewing machine.”
His designs are made from different types of African fabrics and materials in general, and the famous ‘chitenje,’ in particular.
The fashionista says far Afro-Retro Fashion Zambia has managed to show case some of its product at major events, including Miss Cavendish 2013, Pink diamond Fashion week 2013 and Estelle Mantel Fashion week 2014 among others.
Kasanga describes his fashion designs and label as unique, modern, vibrant and ready to wear as they blend the western dress code into African dressing.
