LUSAKA’S Town Centre market traders have complained about the poor sanitation conditions they are subjected to work under due to the ever increasing amount of uncollected garbage by the Lusaka City Council (LCC).
The traders have expressed fear that the uncollected heaps of garbage at the market could lead to the outbreak of water borne diseases such as cholera and dysentery.
Speaking in an interview, the traders said heaps of garbage at the market have not been collected by the council for the past one week.
The marketers have blamed LCC for the uncollected waste, explaining that the council charged them a daily fee for the collection of garbage at the market.
Some traders spoken to, called on the local authority to step up garbage collection in the Central Business District (CBD).
Meanwhile, LCC public relation manager Mulunda Habeenzu said the council is making efforts to implement an effective waste collection service in all the markets around the city.
Mr. Habeenzu has since said the local authority will soon be meeting various stake holders and other partners to discuss ways of addressing the issue of garbage collection in the City of Lusaka.
