We want to improve the reading and writing culture in schools – NAQEZ

NAQEZ is an organisation established under the Ministry of Education that will work hand in hand with the Ministry to help improve the quality of education especially in the rural areas. The organisation will also aim at improving the teacher-pupil ratio by assisting the Mnistry of Education in the recruitment teachers. THE Ministry of Education, Science and Vocational Training and Early Child Education has today launched the National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ).

Speaking during the launch, Minister of Education Michael Kaingu said NAQEZ is an organisation that will work hand in hand with the Ministry of Education to help improve the quality of education especially in the rural areas.

Dr. Kaingu further said the organisation will also aim at improving the teacher-pupil ratio by assisting in the recruitment teachers.

“We as an organisation want to ensure easy access of libraries in Schools … NAQEZ will also be responsible for carrying out sensitisation programs against alcohol and drug abuse among pupils and help support the recruitment of teachers in community schools,” he added.

The minister said this in a speech read on his behalf by Ministry of Education acting board director of standards Dominic Nyambe.

And speaking at the launch which was held at the Commonwealth Youth Centre, NAQEZ board chairperson Lukas Nkoma said his organisation is concerned with improving the reading and writing culture of Zambian schools.

Mr. Nkoma said the reading and writing culture of Zambians can be improved by ensuring that every school has a library with latest books and information.

“We cannot say we want to improve the quality of education and yet leave libraries stocked with the same old information. We need to realise that these days education is more advanced than in the past,” he said.

The NAQEZ Chairperson has called on various stakeholders to come on board and help improve the quality of education through provision of learning equipment like computers.
