Chawama and George compounds sensitised on water and sanitation

In an interview with the Lusaka star, Alliance for Sustainable Development (ASD) executive director Brenda Hanampoto said the project was aimed at creating awareness on how to manage solid waste. ALLIANCE for Sustainable Development (ASD) has together with Ox Farm Zambia and Village Water embarked on a project to sensitize residents of Chawama and George compound on proper management of solid waste in helping improve water sanitation.

In an interview with the Lusaka star, ASD executive director Brenda Hanampoto said the project was aimed at creating awareness on how to manage solid waste.

“We basically want to create awareness on how to manage and dispose of solid waste in a proper way,” she explained.

Hanampoto further added, “This project will help residents to see value in solid waste management……. the project has been linked to the recyclers in the private sector thus this will in turn help residents earn an income and help in poverty reduction.”

She said about 40 people from both Chawama and George had been trained on proper solid management.

Meanwhile, some George compound residents have expressed happiness at the efforts the Lusaka Water And Sewerage Company (LWSC) together with Ox Farm and ASD were doing to not only help provide clean water but also educating them on the importance of keeping a healthy environment.

Speaking to the Lusaka star, one of the residents Godfrey Mwanza said, “This is helping us know how to use clean water and how to manage solid waste in the environment and prevent the spread of diseases such as cholera and diahorrea.”

And LWSC community development officer Benedict Kalunga said LWSC would continue to sensitize residents on the use of good and clean water.

She urged the residents to treat their drinking water with chlorine and to stop using water from shallow wells.

Kalunga said LWSC would soon embark on a project on hand washing to sensitize school going children in order to encourage culture of hand washing among them.
