United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) pledges 85 percent of the USD 6 million NRC renewal project THE United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will foot 85 Percent of the USD 6 milion new National Registration Card project budget.

In an interview with the Lusaka Star National Registration, Passport and Citizenship registrar general Mathews Nyirongo said 85 percent will be financed by UNDP while 15 percent will be funded by the Zambian government.

Mr Nyirongo said the Ministry of Home Affairs under the department of National Registration, Passport and Citizenship in partnership with the UNDP had embarked on a project to renew the national registration cards in order to strengthen the identity system in the country.

He said the issuance of the new NRC was expected to begin by June 30th, 2014 after the contract had been signed, equipment installed and the testing phase completed.

“The project will run in three phases and will begin with Lusaka province followed by the provincial centres and finally the districts throughout the country’’ he said.

Mr Nyirongo noted that the NRCs were subjected to change because of their vulnerability to illegal activities such as foreigners altering documents and wishing to participate in the elections.

He added that the new NRCs would update of the civil register by removing deceased people from the registration system and therefore enhance accurate statistics.
