Prominent music producer and K-Army founder Yahya Kaba, popularly known as Killer Beats (KB), has urged musicians to understand music contracts before signing agreements in order to avoid misunderstandings and exploitation in the industry.
This follows confusion between Yo Maps’ management and Muzo aka Alphonso’s management regarding the song ‘Chafina’.
In an interview with Lusaka Star, KB said there is need for more education and awareness to help musicians understand contracts before entering into agreements, noting that many musicians do not fully understand the terms they sign.
“People should treat music like any other business. When you want to work with another musician, you have to sign a contract to protect yourselves from misunderstandings, like what is happening between Yo Maps and Muzo,” KB said.
He added that contracts are important because they help musicians understand their rights and responsibilities.
Meanwhile, Kabwe-based artist Emmanuel Njovu, also known as Brokenhill Emmy, said some musicians sign contracts without fully understanding how the agreements work.
“This is the same issue between Yo Maps and Muzo. There is a lack of understanding of how royalties work,” he said.
Njovu said artists should take time to understand the terms and conditions before entering into any agreement.
He added that musicians need to understand issues surrounding contracts, including royalties and ownership of their work.
“I believe there is a need for entertainment lawyers who can help in interpreting these contracts,” he said.
