International Concerts Raises Questions on Collaboration in Zambia

The upcoming performance by Nigerian BET award winner Davido in Zambia has generated excitement among fans, while also sparking debate on whether international concerts significantly contribute to the growth and collaboration of the local music industry.

Some local musicians argue that such events do not automatically translate into industry development, saying sustainable growth depends on stronger local support systems.

Speaking in an interview with Lusaka Star, musician Kenani Kaunda, populary known by his stage name Super Kena, said Zambian artists and government institutions hold the key to advancing the country’s music industry.

“The only people who can take the music industry in Zambia to another level are the government and the musicians themselves,” he said.

He said the presence of international artists in Zambia does not necessarily elevate the industry.

Super Kena expressed doubt about the possibility of meaningful networking between local artists and visiting international performers, saying limited time often restricts engagement.

“On my behalf, I think there will be no making connections with Davido because immediately he performs, he is likely to leave quickly, making it difficult to network,” he said.

Meanwhile, Musician Gabriel Tembo said the concert presents a valuable opportunity for local artists to gain exposure and potential collaboration.

“It’s really a big opportunity for Zambian artists because they will get a chance to work with an international artist,” he said.

And Upcoming artist Chanda Kabwe said the event is a source of motivation for young musicians.

“It motivates me to work hard and improve my music. It gives me hope that one day I can share the stage with an international artist,” he said.

He added that such concerts help build bridges between local and international music industries, offering inspiration for emerging talent.
