Zambian musicians and comedians have called for equal recognition from fans, with industry players dismissing claims of a growing rivalry between the two groups.
Music producer Chanza Kasongo said in an interview that there is no serious competition between musicians and comedians, as they serve different purposes within the same entertainment industry.
Kasongo explained that comedians often attract larger online audiences because of their funny and relatable content, which resonates quickly with viewers on social media platforms.
He, however, advised comedians to widen their reach by collaborating with creatives beyond Zambia in order to gain the same level of attention and recognition often enjoyed by musicians.
“Comedians and musicians are doing different things, so there should not be a rivalry between them,” Kasongo said.
Meanwhile, comedian Joseph Mwanachilala, popularly known as DJ Dibro, said comedians are still not receiving the recognition they deserve despite producing quality content.
Mwanachilala said many comedians continue to work hard, but their efforts are often overlooked by the public.
He added that social media has contributed to the perceived competition, as more people now spend time on their phones than watching television.
Mwanachilala noted that the digital space has intensified comparisons in terms of popularity, views and public attention between comedians and musicians.
The discussion reflects shifting trends in Zambia’s entertainment industry, where social media is increasingly shaping public perception and influencing visibility among creatives.
