The University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) Electoral Commission, has issued a strong warning to students intending to contest in the 2025 General Elections, urging them to stop all forms of early and unlawful campaigning.
In a memo released yesterday, UNZASU Electoral Commission Chairperson, Theophilus Kolobeki expressed serious concern over what he described as an increase in premature campaigns by some aspiring candidates.
“UNZASU Electoral Commission has noted with grave concern the escalation of unlawful and premature campaigns by some students aspiring for various positions in the upcoming UNZASU general elections,” Mr Kolobeki stated.
He reminded the students that campaigning before the officially designated period is against the law, citing Article 44(1)(i) of the 2024 UNZA Constitution, which clearly prohibits early electioneering.
Mr Kolobeki further warned that any student found violating the campaign rules will face serious consequences, including permanent disqualification from participating in the elections.
“The Commission will not hesitate to take action against any student who breaks the law. This includes being banned from contesting in the elections,” he warned.
Mr Kolobeki urged all students to respect the election guidelines and avoid engaging in premature campaigns.
UNZASU General Elections are scheduled to take place in August, ahead of examinations, following changes made to the 2024/2025 academic calendar.
