Mulyata orders safety measures after Luangwa Bridge crash

Following the death of two people in a fatal road traffic accident at Luangwa Bridge Market on June 13, 2025, Lusaka Province Minister Sheal Mulyata has visited the accident scene and consoled the grieving families.

In a statement issued by Lusaka Province Administration Principal Public Relations Officer Logic Lukwanda, Mrs Mulyata ordered the immediate erection of speed humps to regulate the speed of downhill eastbound traffic and help prevent similar accidents.

“If the place had proper traffic control and speed humps strategically placed, the accident would have been avoided,” she noted.

Mrs. Mulyata further directed that the traffic police checkpoint currently located at Luangwa Bridge Market be moved uphill immediately to slow down eastbound and downhill traffic for the safety of traders and to avoid a recurrence of such accidents.

She added that she will engage the Road Development Agency (RDA), the Zambia Police Service and the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) to quickly enhance safety at Luangwa Bridge Market.

“I will lead the process to ensure adequate compensation for the families of the victims,” the minister said.

Meanwhile, one of the traders, Katongo Phiri pleaded with the minister to ensure that the person responsible for the accident, through their company, adequately compensates all traders who lost their merchandise so they can restart their businesses.

On June 13, Two females who were trading at the Luangwa bridge market died on the spot while several others sustained injuries when an east bound Sino Truck hit into several makeshift market stands with some of the occupants before hitting into a stationary Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) Toyota as it allegedly lost breaks.
