China pledges continued support to telecommunication

Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Yang Youming says his government will continue working closely with the Zambian government in the quest to motivate the development of Zambia’s telecommunications industry.

Mr. Youming said China was alive to the role of the telecommunications sector in national development, saying hence that country’s continued support towards the modernization of Zambia’s telecommunications industry.

He was speaking in Lusaka recently when he toured the newly constructed Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA)’s state-of-the-art Data Centre to ascertain how the facility would modernise the country’s electronic systems and bring development to every Zambian.

“The telecommunication industry is very important to every country in terms of providing services to the development in all sectors.”

“It is for this very reason that we will continued providing the necessary support aimed at transforming this country’s telecommunications industry for sustainable national development,” said Ambassador Youming.

And speaking at the same event, Minister of Transport and Communication, Brian Mushimba thanked the Chinese government and Huawei Technologies for bringing such development to Zambia.

“I am happy that Huawei and the Chinese government have partnered with the Zambian government to make sure that we deliver quality technology to help make Zambia become more efficient and more productive by adopting advanced technologies in what we do every day,” said Mr Mushimba.

The national data centre facility will be used by the government to provide hosting services to the Zambian government and private institutions, and is expected to help reduce ICT expenditure in the country, where internet access is limited among the population due to high prices.

The centre has the capacity to store 3 pegabytes of data; that is, equivalent to 3 million high-definition movies.
