Veteran Journalist, Oliver Kanene has challenged young journalists to remain informed, adaptable and respectful toward experienced practitioners.
Mr Kanene made the remarks in an interview with Lusaka Star as Zambia joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2026.
Zambia is also expected to host the World Press Freedom Day Global Conference on May 4 and 5 at Mulungushi International Conference Centre, attracting more than 1,000 local and international delegates.
“Journalism is not just about carrying a press badge. It is about being informed,” Mr Kanene said.
He criticised attitudes that dismiss senior journalists as outdated, saying valuable lessons from older generations remain relevant despite technological changes.
“The fundamentals of journalism have not changed significantly. What has changed are the circumstances and technologies around us,” Mr Kanene said.
He called for stronger mentorship programmes within media institutions and encouraged veteran journalists to actively guide younger practitioners.
Looking ahead, Mr Kanene said Zambia’s hosting of the World Press Freedom Day Global Conference is a source of national pride and an opportunity for learning and international cooperation.
“We should make the most of these conferences by attending workshops, networking and learning from journalists from other countries,” he said.
Mr Kanene believes the gathering will provide an important platform to discuss the future of journalism in an increasingly digital and politically complex world.
“It will be an excellent opportunity for all of us to share experiences and discuss the future of journalism,” he said.
And Chairperson of MISA Zambia, Lorraine Chisanga, has described the conference as a significant milestone, positioning the country as a regional hub for media advocacy and dialogue on issues such as digital rights, artificial intelligence and peacebuilding.
She urged journalists across the country to turn up in large numbers to celebrate their day.
The World Press Freedom Day and Global Conference will be held under the theme: “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security.”
