Physical Activity,A Key to Unlocking Students’ Mental Wellness

Regular exercise has been increasingly recognized as one of the most effective remedies for maintaining physical well-being, while also serving as a powerful tool for stress relief.

Although going to the gym often comes with discomfort, fatigue, and the initial resistance of pushing one’s limits, the long-term benefits make it a worthwhile investment.

For students, the demands of academic life extend far beyond the classroom. They face physical strain from long hours of study, emotional pressure from expectations, mental fatigue from continuous assessments, and, for some, spiritual exhaustion as they try to find balance and purpose.

These challenges can take a significant toll if not properly managed.

According to a Psychologist and Critical Thinking Coach Darlington Mwendabai, exercise can reduce stress and improve students’ academic performance in schools.

“Physical exercise stimulates mental functions, which as a result improves concentration and memory,” Mr. Mwendabai said.

“Different activities increase blood flow and oxygen to the brain, helping students process information faster.”

He noted that active students are more alert and capable of analyzing and coming up with practical solutions.

Mr. Mwendabai further said that these activities can reduce stress and anxiety by producing endorphins, which improve mood and reduce emotional tensions.

“One of the most notable benefits that people overlook is the economic benefit. You can increase productivity, be more efficient, and reduce self-care costs because you would not be a sickly student,” he said.

Meanwhile, a Gymnast Rodgers Kapaya Mwape said that during lifting weights, there’s excessive blood flow to the brain, which helps students have good focus, memory, and retention of information.

Mr. Mwape added that exercising helps with better sleep patterns, which aids in having a better rest and memory consolidation.

“Physical activities, such as going to the gym, enable one to have time management and discipline,” he said.

Exercising becomes more than just a lifestyle choice,it becomes a necessity. Engaging in regular physical activity offers students a healthy outlet to manage stress, improve concentration, boost energy levels, and enhance overall well-being.

As academic pressures continue to rise, the gym and other forms of exercise are proving to be essential spaces where students can recharge, refocus, and build resilience.
