Litter at Goma fields a health hazard- UNZA Management

University of Zambia management says litter at the Goma Fields has become a health hazard and poses a huge challenge to Managment. THE University of Zambia (UNZA) management has attributed the accumulation of garbage and litter at UNZA’s Goma fields to overpopulation of students.

UNZA Public Relations Officer Stanslous Chewe told the Lusaka Star in an interview that mishandling of garbage by garbage collectors and scavengers at the Goma Fields was a health hazard that posed a huge challenge on UNZA Management.

He noted that management was putting in place measures that would limit people from using the fields as a dumping area.

Mr Chewe appealed to University staff in charge of garbage collection and disposal to dispose all garbage in the garbage containers provided at the Goma Fields.

Meanwhile, UNZA Hot-Culture Department Sales Assistant Siwa Mwale said there was need to increase man power in order to ensure efficiency among workers.

“The institution has cut off the number of general cleaning workers from 60 to 25 of which there are only 8 personnel present at the Great East Road campus. The rest of the workers have been divided and deployed to Ridge way campus and Marshlands campus for the distance students,” he explained.

Mr. Mwale added that the institution had come up with a plan to build a U type wall fence that would prevent garbage scavengers from scattering litter on to the fields.

He noted that the project had already been budgeted for and currently some building materials such as blocks, building sand and burglar bars had been purchased.

Mr. Mwale added that the University was planning to buy its own truck for garbage collection which would ensure efficiency in the institution and generate income for the institution.
