It is hoped that the trees will restore the country’s depleted forests and mitigate the effects of climate change KONKOLA Copper Mines (KCM) Plc and the government have agreed to plant 100, 000 trees in Chingola and Chililabombwe this year in order to restore the country’s depleted forests and mitigate the effects of climate change.
Speaking in an interview with the Lusaka Star, Minister of Lands, Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, Wilbur Simuusa, said Government and KCM Plc have signed a memorandum of understanding to commence the planting of trees.
“We need to appreciate the importance of trees to our environment and this tree planting culture should spread countrywide,” Mr. Simuusa said.
He noted that a green and healthy environment also helps in the promoting of socio-economic development.
Mr. Simuusa said that he was happy with the stride taken by KCM Plc in addressing environmental challenges.
“The trees are also expected to reduce soil erosion especially along river banks,” he said.
Mr. Simuusa said government would continue to partner with the private sector on the tree planting exercise.
