NGOCC to Support Over 500 Women in General Elections

The Non-Governmental Gender Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has made a promise to support over five hundred women who are ready to participate in the upcoming general elections.

Speaking in an interview with Lusaka Star, NGOCC Executive Director Anne Anamela stated that NGOCC has assessed the readiness of women interested in contesting through sensitization programs, training in public speaking and campaign strategies.

“We have also engaged 26 political parties securing commitments to address underrepresentation of women, youths and persons with disabilities in decision making roles,” Anamela  said.

She said that to engage with political parties the NGOCC has launched the campaign, urging parties to support and adopt women candidates.

“NGOCC is working to raise awareness and promote equitable governance,”She said.

Meanwhile a Governance Expert Wesley Miyanda highlighted the challenges women face due to financial constraint.

“Most women are not financially sound and they need financial support which is not available,” Miyanda said.

He urged everyone to support the women who are vying to engage in politics.

He encouraged the NGOCC to support women who intend to stand as presidential or parliamentary candidates either materialistically or financially.
