ZRST OBSERVES 5th UN GLOBAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK 2019

The Zambia Road Safety Trust (ZRST) has joined the global community in observing the 5th United Nations Global Road Safety Week to provide an opportunity for civil society to generate demands for strong leadership for road safety which will save lives in the country.

ZRST Senior Communications AdvisorĀ  Mailos Mwale said this at a press conference held under the theme, ā€˜’Leadership for Road Safetyā€™’ adding that the goal of the entire week, is to generate a demand from the public for stronger leadership for road safety Worldwide.

“The main objectives of the UN Global Road Safety Week are to provide an opportunity for civil society to generate demands for strong leadership for road safety, especially around concrete, evidence-based interventions which will save lives,” said Mr. Mwale.

Mr. Mwale said it will also inspire leaders to take action by showcasing examples of strong leadership for road safety within governments, international agencies, NGOs, foundations, schools and universities, and private companies, among others.

He noted that enlightened leaders are able to provide a vision of what the future might look like and to mobilize action to achieve this saying the theme acknowledges that stronger leadership is needed to advance road safety in countries and communitiesĀ  around the World.

ā€œIt is key to achieving road safety targets, including SDG target 3.6 to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries by 50% by 2020 and SDG target 11.2 to provide access to safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all by 2030,ā€ Mr. Mwale said.

Mr. Mwale further said that the Zambia Road Safety Trust will participate in the activities leading up to and during the Global Road Safety Week in collaborating with the Road Transport & Safety Agency to sensitize people about their own Road Safety.
