University of Zambia (UNZA) Library Management has distanced itself from the poster that castigated female students for going to the library “half-naked”.
The poster, which was typed in extra-bold letters, claimed that female students that were accessing the library “half-naked” were destructing their male counterparts.
The material, which was stuck on strategic locations within the vast library, was also covered by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Africa.
But in a lengthy letter addressed to “All University of Zambia Library Users”, the library management denied producing the poster.
“It has come to our attention that there was a poster purporting to have come from University of Zambia Library Management, prescribing a dress code for our esteemed female Library users.
“We would like to unreservedly apologise to our female Library users for any offense caused,” read the letter.
The letter also urged female students to ignore the poster and concentrate on their studies.
“The poster does not reflect who we are–we are a space that promotes access to all our Library materials to people from all walks of life.
“We urge all our female Library users to feel comfortable when using the library,” it read.
The letter further read that “Library management has instituted investigations into the matter so that culprits are brought to book.”
The questionable poster has prompted students at the country’s largest and oldest university to start questioning the security of the gigantic library.
