WFP launches ‘scaling up nutrition movement’.

… The ‘scaling up nutrition movement’ is aimed at reducing hunger in the country and improve nutrition ZAMBIA through the World Food Program has launched the Scaling up Nutrition (SUN) Movement to develop nutrition in the country.

The SUN movement which was aimed at uniting governments, civil society, the United Nations’ donors, researchers and businesses in collective effort to develop and implement strategies that improve nutrition was founded on the principle that would allow everyone to have the right to food and good nutrition.

Zambia National Food and Nutrition Commission acting executive director, Musonda Mofu said Zambia could scale up nutrition if businesses, government as well as civil society organisations worked hand in hand on this program.

Mr. Mofu added that it was essential that stakeholders, civil society organisations and the community came together and partner with government in brightening up the nutrition agenda.

He added, “The government through the ministry of health, community development mother and child health, the ministry of Agriculture and livestock, the ministry of education, and the ministry of local government and housing have recognised this fact that these ministries alone , cannot solve this problem without any partnership.”

Mr. Mofu also noted that solving the problem of nutrition was not easy, as nutrition causes went beyond hunger.

Mr. Mofu further added that in an effort to address the problem of nutrition, there was need to engage other aspects such as water, sanitation, hygiene, media as well as communication.

He called on all stakeholders to come on board and partner with government in addressing the problem of nutrition.

Meanwhile, United Nations resident coordinator, Janet Rogan advised the private sector to partner with government in order to ensure zero hunger in the country.

Ms. Rogan called on government, civil societies and the community throughout the world to get involved in conducting the scaling up nutrition movement.
