How UNZA YO MAPS is balancing a promising music career with Physiotherapy Studies

A fourth-year Physiotherapy Student at the University of Zambia (UNZA) has decided to venture into the music industry while striking a balance between science and sound.

At UNZA, where textbooks and lectures often dominate student life, 24-year-old Zambian rising Afro-pop artist Tobias Mwansa has refused to let assignments and textbooks define his entire university journey.

Tobias, better known by his two stage names UNZA-YO MAPS and Tobiano FRTM, asserts that he is determined to make his mark in Zambia’s competitive music industry. He is proving that academics and art do not have to be mutually exclusive.

While many know him for his calming presence in class and commitment to healthcare, others recognize and liken him to one of Zambia’s finest artists, Yo Maps, because of his smooth vocals, relatable lyrics, and heartfelt melodies that speak to real-life struggles and joys.

“Music isn’t just a hobby for me it’s a form of therapy, expression, and connection,” Tobias says.

His musical journey began in 2016, inspired by personal experiences, emotions, and the people around him.

Tobias’s first song, Dance with Me, was written in 2015, soon after he passed his Grade Nine examinations a celebration of life’s small victories.Since then, he has been using music as a powerful tool to tell stories and connect with listeners from all walks of life.

“I usually create a tune first, then the beat follows. Sometimes I just sit with an idea and build lyrics around it. It’s about translating emotions into melody,” Tobias explains.

His songwriting process is raw and grounded, often reflecting his upbringing, relationships, and student life. From stress relief during exam season to boosting confidence during campus events, music plays a vital role in shaping his student identity.

Despite the demanding nature of his physiotherapy program, Tobias remains committed to his music. He dedicates his free time to songwriting, beat creation, and rehearsals ensuring that both passions receive equal attention.

“UNZA has helped me build resilience. My friends and classmates support my music and push me to do better, both in class and in the studio,” Tobias says.

He believes that music and academics do not clash in fact, they complement each other. During stressful times, music becomes his escape and motivation, while the discipline from school feeds into his work ethic as an artist.

Tobiano draws inspiration from both international and local icons, citing Diamond Platnumz, Tekno Miles, Macky 2, and Chef 187.However, he confesses that Zambian sensation Yo Maps resonates with him the most.

“Yo Maps embodies everything I believe I am. Sometimes I watch his videos and say, ‘That’s exactly me,’” Tobias says.

Songs like Pick It Up and the album My Hero have shaped his artistic style and mindset influencing not just his sound but also his personal character.

Close friend Paul Phiri praised Tobias for his unwavering spirit in following his dream.“I’ve known Tobias since 2020.

His humility, determination, and passion have always stood out. His music is authentic because it comes from real life. I have no doubt he’s destined for great things,” Phiri said.

Tobiano has set his sights on building a strong fan base at UNZA and creating music that touches lives beyond mere entertainment. He believes in the power of collaboration and sees it as a stepping stone to reaching more people.

“Collaboration is vital. I’m looking forward to working with artists like Macky 2 and Slap D. I want my music to influence culture and help others grow their brands too,” Tobias says.

His upcoming single, Kukosapofye, is already generating buzz among friends and early listeners, marking what he hopes will be a defining moment in his career.

For Tobias, music is more than just sound it is identity, confidence, growth, and a way to honour the small victories while staying focused on bigger goals.

As he continues his academic journey and sharpens his sound, Tobias stands as a powerful example of how passion and purpose can coexist. In a world where many are forced to choose, Tobias chooses both.
