There has been a low participation of junior golfers in the country Former Lusaka Junior Open champion has bemoaned the low participation of junior golfers in the country.
Speaking in an interview with the Lusaka Star, Michael Chiluba said it was sad to see that participation of junior golfers in the country had reduced.
“I am deeply concerned about the current trends of the junior golf in the country because the participation by junior golfers is low,” he commented.
“I am worried because when I compare the days when I was a junior golfer to the present day, there would be an average of 15 golfers participating in the golf tournaments unlike the current situation where there is only an average 3-4 juniors participating,” Chiluba added.
Chiluba who is also former Canadian junior open champion further expressed sadness over the little support from well-wishers towards junior golf in the country.
“There has been little support received from parents and the corporate world and this has led to the sport being ignored,” he said.
The former Kenya open champion added: “I hope other parents can emulate my parents who helped with my achievements in the sport.”
Chiluba further added that despite the sport being expensive there was need to invest and support junior golf because they were the future professionals of the sport.
He has since urged the Zambia Junior Golf Association (ZJGA) to put up measures that will enhance the participation of junior golfers in the country.
