UN Resident Coordinator Kanni Wignaraja says a well-functioning civil court system is a core pillar of ensuring national development.
Ms Wignaraja, who is also United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) representative stated that a well functioning civil court system would protect and promote social justice for all, irrespective of their differences.
She said in an interview with the Lusaka Star following the signing ceremony of the "Support to Civil Court System Modernization” initiative in Lusaka.
Ms Wignaraja said the move by the judiciary to assess one of its civil court systems in order to modernise and upgrade its services to the public was a positive development.
"In order to have an optimal civil courts system in operation, one does need to take a hard look at what is working and what is not, that will ensure justice for all. A needs assessment is an objective precursor to investing in the needed reforms, for any real institutional transformation can only be accepted," she added.
She stated, "this is, therefore, a welcome decision by the Judiciary and one that we, as UNDP, look forward to supporting directly. The initiative that we have just signed is also an important part of further strengthening of the Judiciary’s role, independence and contribution in Zambia."
Ms Wignaraja said UNDP had inputed USD 110,000 ( about K 600,000) to the exercise.
