The University of Zambia Management has described as illegal and misplaced the move by the University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers Union (UNZALARU) to go on a go-slow.
UNZA lectueres have been on a go-slow since early this week, in protest of management’s habitual delays in paying them their longstanding gratuities, among other things.
But in response, the UNZA acting registrar, Rogers Phiri, has given UNZALARU 24 hours to call the go-slow off or face punitive measures.
Mr. Phiri said the decision by the union to go slow is not provided for in any of the provisions of the Industrial and Labour Relations Act.
He warned that management would be left with no choice but to invoke provisions of the Recognition Agreement if the union fails to stop the go-slow.
Mr. Phiri noted that being a public university, UNZA is funded by government and cannot proceed with negotiations without obtaining guidance on necessary parameters from government.
Effort to get comment from the UNZALARU publicity secretary, Moffat Moyo, proved futile as his phone went unanswered.
