WECSZ Livingstone Branch chairperson Benjamin Mibenge said people’s mentality towards environmental conservation must change adding that they should take the lead in keeping their environment clean.
” When we keep our surroundings clean, we don’t do it for everybody, we do it for ourselves. No one will clean Zambia for us, we must take the lead to do it then it will be easy for other people to give us a helping hand,” he added.
Mr. Mibenge stated that people should not wait for the local authority to keep their surroundings clean but must take the lead in cleaning up their own environment.
“There are many people in society today resisting change in conservation. They say this job is for the council. When there is a disease outbreak, everyone will be affected and put at risk of getting the disease. Therefore issues to do with environmental conservation and sustainability are everybody’s business,” he explained.
Mr. Mibenge has called on various companies in the country to partner with organisations that are concerned with environmental conservation and sustainability.
He told the Lusaka Star in an interview during the Victoria Falls clean-up exercise in commemoration of the World Tourism Day on 27th September that was organised by Sun International Zambia with the help of other stakeholders.
Meanwhile, Sun International Zambia (SIZ) public relations manager Joyce Sikabbubba said SIZ Staff together with WECSZ and other stakeholders from the Chongololo and Conservation Club participated in the clean-up exercise of areas around the Victoria Falls.
She explained that the clean-up exercise would help maintain the face of the Victoria Falls and protect its biodiversity.
Ms. Sikabbubba said this is in line with the company’s commitment in conserving the environment.
This year’s World Tourism Day was held under the theme, ‘Tourism and Water; Protecting our Common Future.’
