Mario Vincent Joins UNZASU Race, Sparks Debate on Content Creators in Student Leadership.

A University of Zambia (UNZA) student and content creator, Mario Vincent, popularly known as Mario Documentary has declared his intention to contest for the position of Information and Publicity in the upcoming University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) elections.

Vincent confirmed his bid, citing his social media influence as a motivating factor.

“I’m going to contest for the Information and Publicity position in the coming election,” he said. “My followers on social media listen to me, and that gives me motivation.”

His entry into the race has reignited discussion among students about the growing involvement of content creators in student politics, particularly regarding leadership suitability and conduct.

Vincent acknowledged that the role would require a shift in his online behavior.

“I will continue entertaining people, but I will only stop insulting,” he said.

He also expressed confidence in his chances, stating that he believes he has strong support among students.

Meanwhile, current Information and Publicity office holder Kaluba Kaluba, popularly known as Unza Wow, outlined the expectations for the role, emphasizing both technical competence and discipline.

“It takes someone with additional skills like photography and the ability to edit videos, especially when covering events,” he said.

Kaluba added that candidates must meet conduct standards set by the institution.

“As a contestant, one has to be upright, with no cases before the Student Board of the Disciplinary Committee, and must possess good behavior,” he said.

Some students have also stressed the importance of character in leadership. UNZA student Febian Ngulube said leadership demands accountability and integrity.

“Being a leader calls for quality, and character and behavior matter a lot,” he said. “Whatever a leader does should be in the interest of the people, as they are entrusted with power.”

While Ngulube did not oppose Vincent’s candidacy, he maintained that personal conduct remains a critical factor for anyone seeking public office.

The UNZASU elections are expected to attract significant attention, particularly as new entrants from digital platforms seek to transition into student leadership roles.
