KCM warns illegal miners in Chingola

Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has expressed deep concern over the growing threat posed by illegal miners who have encroached on its operational area in Chingola, carrying out unauthorised activities directly above the Nchanga Underground Mine.

In a statement to Lusaka Star, KCM Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, John Kundawarned that the invasion poses a significant risk to the structural stability of the mine and endangers the lives of thousands of employees working underground.

“Immediate and decisive action is critical to prevent a catastrophic loss of life. The safety of our workforce and environment is our highest priority, and we must act now,” Dr. Kunda said.

He emphasised that the Nchanga Underground Mine remains one of KCM’s most vital assets and is central to the company’s operations in Chingola, the headquarters of the Vedanta Resources-owned mining operation.

Dr. Kunda appealed to law enforcement agencies and community leaders to intervene promptly in order to protect human life and preserve national mining infrastructure.
