Some residents of Lusaka’s Kalingalinga compound have raised concerns over the accumulation of garbage along Nangwenya road.
Joshua Chanda, a concerned resident and frequent road user, drew attention to the gravity of the situation.
“The garbage here poses a significant health hazard, considering its close proximity to Kalingalinga Primary school and East Park Mall. If this issue is left unaddressed, it could result in widespread illnesses,” Mr. Chanda said.
He urged his fellow residents to unite and take action to clean up the area.
Kalingalinga Ward 36 Counsellor Mukubesa Nyoni said the issue is escalating due to some local residents employing mentally ill individuals for garbage disposal, in an attempt to avoid paying the local council for proper waste management.
He advised the residents to refrain from engaging in such practices that perpetuate the garbage crisis.
“Those who will be spotted not using the proper means of garbage disposal will be punished,” Mr. Nyoni said.
The mounting garbage crisis has sparked concerns about it’s potential health hazards, prompting a call for immediate action.
