The Zambia Correctional Service (ZCS) has joined efforts to improve sanitation at the University of Zambia (UNZA) after donating 100 waste bins to support cleanliness across the institution.
ZCS Commissioner General Frederick Chilukutu made the donation as part of a broader initiative aimed at promoting a clean and healthy learning environment for students and staff.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Mr. Chilukutu said maintaining sanitation in learning institutions is critical in safeguarding public health and fostering a conducive academic atmosphere.
He emphasized that ZCS is committed to contributing to national development beyond its core mandate by supporting community-based initiatives such as sanitation programs.
In a show of personal commitment to the institution, Mr. Chilukutu also adopted TP5 Room 6, the room he occupied during his time as a student at UNZA between 1993 and 1996.
He pledged to ensure that the facility is well-maintained and continues to serve students in a clean and habitable condition.
Additionally, the Commissioner General adopted Zambezi Hostel 2, where his wife was accommodated during her studies, further demonstrating a strong connection and sense of responsibility towards the institution.
Mr. Chilukutu noted that the gesture is meant to inspire both current students and alumni to take an active role in maintaining the university’s infrastructure and cleanliness.
Meanwhile, ZCS partnered with the Zambia National Service (ZNS) in reinforcing sanitation efforts at the university. While ZNS has already been spearheading cleanliness initiatives at UNZA, ZCS will focus specifically on cleaning activities to complement the ongoing work.
University authorities welcomed the support, describing it as timely and essential in addressing sanitation challenges on campus.
They have since called on other stakeholders and cooperating partners to emulate ZCS’s initiative in order to sustain a clean and healthy environment.
The sanitation campaign at UNZA forms part of a wider effort to promote hygiene standards in public institutions, especially in the wake of increasing concerns over waste management and environmental health.
Students also expressed appreciation for the donation, noting that the additional waste bins will help reduce littering and encourage responsible waste disposal practices across campus.
