Zambia marks Freedom Day with Peace.

Government representatives gathered in Lusaka today to commemorate World Press Freedom Day 2026, with a strong call to shape a more peaceful and responsible media environment.

The event, held at Government Complex Center attended by members of the press and the public, brought together key industry players to reflect on the role of the media in promoting peace and national development.

Speaking during the commemoration, stakeholders emphasized the importance of press freedom as a cornerstone of democracy. They noted that a free and independent media plays a critical role in ensuring transparency, accountability, and informed public discourse.

This year’s theme, centered on shaping a peaceful future, resonated strongly with participants, who highlighted the growing need for ethical journalism in an era marked by misinformation and digital influence. Media practitioners were urged to uphold professionalism and integrity in their reporting, especially when covering sensitive issues that could impact social harmony.

The gathering also showcased collaboration among different media organizations, with representatives from radio, television, and digital platforms in attendance. Equipment such as cameras and recording devices set up at the venue reflected the active role of journalists in documenting and disseminating information.

Some speakers pointed out that while Zambia has made strides in promoting media freedom, challenges such as political pressure, limited resources, and safety concerns for journalists still persist. They called for continued efforts from both the government and civil society to create a safer and more enabling environment for the press.

Attendees listened attentively, with some taking notes, as discussions focused on strengthening media laws and fostering dialogue between journalists and authorities. The presence of both young and experienced media practitioners highlighted the importance of mentorship and capacity building within the industry.

As the event concluded, participants reiterated their commitment to using journalism as a tool for peacebuilding and national unity. The commemoration served not only as a celebration of press freedom but also as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with it.
