The University of Zambia Students’ Union (UNZASU) President, Jones Mwewa, has called on students at the institution to vote on merit in the forth coming elections.
Speaking in an interview with the Lusaka Star, Mr. Mwewa, urged the students not to vote on the basis of logistics or party affiliation.
“They should not vote based on logistics or party affiliation. Let them vote on merit. Let them choose the best candidate for the future of Zambia,” Said Mr. Mwewa.
He further advised students not to be used as tools for political violence and propaganda by politicians.
“Students should refrain from being used as tools of political violence and propaganda but instead preach messages of peace.” He said.
Mr. Mwewa, observed that Zambia is a peaceful country, hence the need for politicians and electorates to remain calm and vote peacefully.
Meanwhile, Mukuba Mukuba, a University of Zambia student in the School of Natural Sciences, called on fellow students to desist from any violent act as the country goes to the polls on August 11.
He said that students are the ones that suffer the most whenever they engage themselves in violent activities.
“If students cannot avoid violence for the sake of the country’s peace, they should try to do it for their own sake because if they engage in violence acts, they are the one’s that tend to lose out because their academic calender will be affected,” said Mukuba.
