Zambians should benefit from the mines says Dr Mphande.

“We shall never see the goodness of having mines as a country if we do not change the way things are done,” Dr Mphande said. A lecturer at the University of Zambia in the school of Mining says Zambia should benefit fully from its Mines.

In an interview with Lusaka star Dr Mathews Mphande said the country has never fully benefited from its mining sector because of certain individuals who are selfish.

“We shall never see the goodness of having mines as a country if we do not change the way things are done,” he said.

Dr Mphande pointed out that since independence, the country has never had a clear system on how it should run its Mines and that is the more reasons why investors have taken advantage of us.

He said that the main problem is that we have left our mines to be controlled by people who do not have the capacity to manage them.

“The country has a lot of people who are well educated who can help to run our mines but due to political influence they are not given the chance to do so,” said Dr Mphande.

He further said that it is very surprising that some countries in the religion are able to manage their mines properly but that is not the case with Zambia.

Dr Mphande said that if only Zambia can manage its nature resources nicely it can be among the developed countries in the religion and the world at large.

“God gave us these nature resources so that we can benefit from them but we are allowing other people to benefit from them at the expense of the Zambian people just because of poor management,” he said.

He also pointed out that the country should come up with laws which will prevent politicians from involving themselves in things they do not understand and instead live them to professionals.

“You do not expect to develop if you allow people who do not understand issues to be the ones in charge,” he said.

Dr Mphande has since called upon the government to be serious with the way they handle issues concerning the mines so that every Zambian can benefit from them.
