THE newly appointed Director General for the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) has pledged to use her experience in various fields to work diligently and make improvements in the way the media operates in Zambia.
University of Zambia Mass Communication Lecturer Ms. Josephine Mapoma was in June this year appointed as director general of the IBA and became the first woman to be appointed to the highest position in a public media institution.
In an interview with the Lusaka Star, Ms. Mapoma said the IBA would work closely with ZICTA to improve on the regulations and standards of media operations in Zambia.
“We need to improve on the regulations and standards of media operation in the country and upgrade the licensing process of the media. We also want to see that broadcasters are working according to their licence,” she said.
Ms. Mapoma is a veteran journalist. She has served as Permanent Secretary in various ministries with her first appointment being in the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. She has a Master of Mass Communication with special focus on media relations and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mass Communication.
Meanwhile, Zambia National Women’s Lobby chairperson Ms. Beauty Phiri has said women who have been charged with responsibility in high offices should put the needs of the people first before their allegiance to the appointing authority.
“People appointed must remember that their appointment is to serve the people of Zambia and not the appointing authority because that is where some people lose it. Let’s pay allegiance to the appointing authority but serving the interest of the people should be first priority,” she said.
Ms. Phiri hailed President Michael Sata for appointing many women to key decision making positions in various institutions.
She congratulated the newly appointed IBA Director General and expressed confidence that she will execute her duties diligently.
