“Be a voice for the voiceless”- emphasizes former UNZASU president

As union leaders there is need to be persistent and resilient in the quest for positive change. FORMER University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) president has instructed students in unions at universities and colleges all over the country to use their positions to speak for the  voiceless.

In an interview with Lusaka Star, 2008 UNZASU president Antonio Mwanza urged the current UNZA students union as well as unions at different learning institutions in the country  to speak out on issues of national development.

“Union leaders must be in the forefront to speak on behalf of their fellow students and the entire faculty of the youths that do not have a voice on matters concerning the development of the nation,” Mwanza said.

The former unionist also urged union leaders to be persistent and resilient in their quest for positive change.

He stated that he would not discourage students from demonstrating because at times dialogue does not work.

“If dialogue does not yield results, the option is to perform demonstrations which have evidently produced results,” said Mwanza.

Meanwhile, current UNZASU president Steven Kyengula says the university union works tirelessly for the plight of the students and it is a mandate of the union to involve every student in the process.

“We have made it a priority to ensure that different students participate and be represented in the various developmental and academic activities,” he said.
