Use music as discussion platform for vices in society- Kapwepwe

“The role of music is to energise society around pressing issues. And the gift of a creative person is to see things in a different way and to show society that they can have something refreshing at a glance”, said Ms Kapwepwe. THE National Arts Council of Zambia (NAC) chairperson Mulenga Kapwepwe has urged Zambian musicians to take advantage of the technological advancement in order to record songs concerning issues that affect the people in society.

She said in an interview with the Lusaka star, that there are a lot of issues in the country that can be talked about in music but they are not being highlighted.

She laments that the current crop of musicians have been affected by external influences.

“The role of music is to energise society around pressing issues. And the gift of a creative person is to see things in a different way and to show society that they can have something refreshing at a glance”, said Ms Kapwepwe.

“When you listen to the music of the olden days, they highlighted so many topics. But the problem with the musicians of today is that they are driven by the love of making money so they produce music that seems to be creating more bars and more money for them”, clarified Ms Kapwepwe.

“I have got a collection of Zambian music that is about 60 years old and I can imagine that it was even harder for those people to record but you still get a really good range of topics, instrumentation, voices and the range of female voices was quite wide, ” said Kapwepwe.
